Hom[e]age began as a dance project. In 2025 Vision.AI.R-E — Ana Sánchez-Colberg with María José Rodríguez Torrado, Gabriel Rivera Vázquez, and Jesús Miranda — travelled to four municipalities of Puerto Rico, dancing with people over sixty in San Germán, Luquillo, Arecibo, and finally San Juan.

The workshops — a warm-up, then creative movement — opened into a devised process in which the participants worked together, giving the work its shape. As they moved, they spoke. Work, migration, home, the barrios raised and razed — the stories came up with the movement.

The final performance gathered in San Juan. But Hom[e]age did not end there. What the participants brought up in those rooms is what this archive holds: the dancing and the archive are one work, the movement the method, the lives it raised the substance.

Hom[e]age makes a space where each person who took part can appear in full singularity.

Arendt begins from that singularity as the condition of human plurality, which has the twofold character of equality and distinction (The Human Condition, 1998, p. 175). She distinguishes what a person is — their qualities, their function, the category they can be filed under — from who they are, which discloses itself only in action and speech, before others (pp. 179–181).

These elders built the contemporary Puerto Rico we live in now — the factories that came and went, the migrations north, the crises and the wars, the storms survived, the barrios raised, the families reared, the towns made and remade — and they carry that history in the hands that did the work, in the routes they still know by heart, in the foods and the songs. This knowledge is not found in any document.

ASC).

Official history records this generation as a what. Hom[e]age makes the conditions for the who to appear. Arendt's term is the space of appearance — it comes into being wherever men are together in the manner of speech and action (p. 199).

The space of appearance is fleeting by nature. What happens when the encounter ends? How does that knowledge pass on without being reduced to a document?

Walter Benjamin puts the origin of history long before its writing. History is not born in archives but in shared speech: before documents, it was the storytellers who held and handed down the experience of a community. For Benjamin the storyteller is the figure who hands experience down, and what disappears when storytelling fades is experience itself (Illuminations, 2019, p. 27). Storytelling is a form of historical knowledge, made of lived memory and of the handing-on.

This is fundamental for Hom[e]age. Information arrives by the hour and asks only to be understood at a glance; experience asks to be lived with and handed on. The project recognises these elders not only as the protagonists of a history but as its storytellers. Their accounts do not illustrate the past; they hand it on. What lives in them is a knowledge older than the written archive, the one that let communities hold and share their history for centuries. The Hom[e]age Digital Archive does not replace that tradition. It carries it on, taking the handing-down into digital space without giving up the experience that gives it its sense.

Handing on does more than extend an experience. It opens a beginning. Arendt calls natality the human capacity to begin something new, and holds that action is the actualisation of the human condition of natality.

In Hom[e]age that beginning arrives when the elders tell their own history. Telling it, they hand on an experience and they appear before others as who they are.

The archive carries that gesture forward. It does not speak for the people who took part. It gives continuity to the movement they began, making the conditions for these stories to come into relation with other people, and for new beginnings to follow.

The choreography does not close with the last performance. It goes on each time a person comes into relation with these stories. Each encounter puts the experience back into circulation and keeps the beginning open.

To enter Hom[e]age is to join that movement. The site sets no single route and no linear reading. Like any choreography, it offers a field of possibilities, and each visitor makes their own way through it.

Each participant holds a space of their own. Image, voice, text and movement meet in an experience that takes on sense only by being travelled.

Beneath the surface of the map the forces that ran through these lives come up too: industrialisation, migration, the wars, the debt, the storms.

Hom[e]age can be travelled many ways. Each itinerary is its own experience.

What the visitor finds is an archive of stories and a place where those stories go back into movement. Each encounter carries on the choreography the project began.

What starts as a passage through an archive ends as an encounter with another person.
